Updated 3 November 2026

Short answer: crop close to the bird so it fills the frame, use 12 to 18 colours for bright feathers, and make it 70 to 120 stitches wide.

Bright feathers

Parrots and budgies have strong, separate colours: green, yellow, blue, red. These become clean blocks of thread, which look good stitched. Make sure each feather colour keeps its own thread in the preview.

Small birds

A small garden bird in a big photo becomes a few stitches. Crop until the bird fills most of the frame before you upload.
