Your first cross-stitch from a photo
Short answer: start small and simple: a photo with one clear subject, 50 to 70 stitches wide, 6 to 10 colours, on 14-count Aida. You'll finish it, and learn enough for a bigger one.
Choices for a first project
- Photo: one subject on a plain background. A silhouette or a pet is ideal.
- Size: 50 to 70 stitches wide.
- Colours: 6 to 10.
- Fabric: 14-count Aida, the easiest to see.
| Width | 14-count | 16-count | 18-count | 22-count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 stitches | 3.6 in (9 cm) | 3.1 in (8 cm) | 2.8 in (7 cm) | 2.3 in (6 cm) |
| 60 stitches | 4.3 in (11 cm) | 3.8 in (10 cm) | 3.3 in (8 cm) | 2.7 in (7 cm) |
| 70 stitches | 5.0 in (13 cm) | 4.4 in (11 cm) | 3.9 in (10 cm) | 3.2 in (8 cm) |
What to buy
- 14-count Aida, cut to the size the pattern shows, with spare fabric around it.
- At least one skein of each DMC colour on the key. Colours used in large areas may need two; the key's stitch counts show which.
- A tapestry needle (blunt tip), an embroidery hoop, small scissors.
How to start
Find the centre of the fabric and the centre of the chart, and stitch outwards. Work one colour in an area before changing threads.
